Bell X1

The bell X1 was the first aircraft to travel faster than the speed of sound, and represents a turning point in aviation from a world of propeller driven aircraft to a new age of jet and rocket aircraft capable of speeds greater than mach one... the speed of sound.
The shape was designed to look like a 50. caliber bullet for areodynamic purposes, and the wings were very thin and shap to reduce drag at supersonic speeds.  The horrizontal tail plain is placed at the top of the fin, out of the air stream of the wings, as loss of pitch control was the main cause of crashes on all previous mach 1 attempts.
For me, the x1 is the greatest design of all time because it was the bridge between the age of the wright brothers and the age of concorde.
