Batteries

Batteries. Probably the unsung heroes behind most electronic consumer products. People don't go out and buy batteries because they want them, they buy batteries because they need them.

Think about your favorite toy as a child. Gameboys, action figures that talked and the television remote all rely completely on batteries to provide you with ours of entertainment. I certainly didn't appreciate the batteries themselves when I was using my Gameboy as a kid. And I'm sure most of you felt the same way.

Apart from mobile phones and laptops, batteries are used in most portable devices. They can be purchased at all grocery stores and milk bars and are available in a number of different sizes.

Batteries are constructed from heavy metals and are harmful to the environment if they are placed into landfill. However, as I discovered while researching this topic, most batteries can be recycled. The most common batteries, alkaline and rechargeable batteries can be recycled, as well as lead-acid automotive batteries, which are 90% recyclable.

My point is that we rely on batteries for most portable devices, whether it be a television remote or a digital radio. They are one of the most desirable products on the market because they make many electronic devices work we own.
