KISS - Heat Indicating Travel Cup and Spoon

Keep it simple stupid. That's the principle I'm working with for this
good measure project. I'm basically designing a coffee travel cup and
matching spoon which both give the temperature of the food or drink
using colour intensity as the indicator. The hotter the liquid, the
darker the colour. Due to the basic nature of the measuring device,
I've been concentrating mainly on the form of the cup and have been
thinking about the context, ergonomics and the pros and cons of
similar products already on the market.

The first two images are my initial concept presentations and I've
since been working on creating a form for both the spoon and the cup
using a particular style which indicates the "paired" nature of the
two products. The rendered form on the third image is the direction
I'm heading in with the coffee cup design. I've decided to include a
hollowed out section so that while the main body of the cup is still
being gripped, less pressure is needed to hold it as the cup can rest
on the user's fingers.

Any feedback regarding the difficulties people have with utensil and
travel cup products currently on the market and any features you might
like to see on the re-designed forms are definitely welcome!

  1. There is good way to combine the cup and spoon, my advice is that u can just trace both the cup and the spoon on one piece of paper, try different angles, different combinations, then some designing idea will directly come up from what u draw, anyway, good luck

  2. ^That's some good advice.

Have you thought about having a recess for the spoon in the cup?

  3. Hey Steph, neat idea about combining the spoon and cup. My boyfriend's mother bought these new bowls that she's really fond of, and they've incorporated a spoon onto the bowl.
It actually looks like a saucepan with the handle and all, and the end of spoon is curved so that it sits in the handle without falling into the bowl. Check it out, it might give you some inspiration:
