Digital radios, although a modern item, still have chunky dials to adjust volume and tuning. Most cheap radios and stereos have volume and tuning dials that do not have a weight to them. These dials not only feel cheap, but they do not satisfy the user. A dial that take more effort to move gives a sense of quality and less chance of being knocked and the volume/tuning changing.
This particular dial from Tivoli has a unique design. The inside dial is rotated by the user, and the outside ring rotates in the opposite direction to the way the dial is being turned. It has a lot of weight to it, reassuring the user that the product they have purchased is quality.
The cold, hard feel of the aluminium dial also reflects the quality of the product.
I noticed that a couple of people on Tuesday had dial designs that where similar to this one. Perhaps they could analyse this dial in greater depth to help them make choices about their own design.
