Oh Great Gravimeter

A gravimeter is a device, which measures the gravitational field of the earth. This device is literally an accelerometer, which specializes in measuring the constant downfall of acceleration. The design of the gravimeter is typically the same as normal accelerometers, but they are designed to be much more sensitive as to get a far more accurate reading.  These instruments are very sensitive to other vibrations to, even noise. Therefore, these other vibrations are counteracted by integral vibration isolation and signal processing. Signal processing is an area, which deals with the operations and analysis of signals, such as filtering sound, and smoothing.

Gravimeters usually come in 2 different types. There is a relative gravimeter which measures the gravity by comparing the gravity of one point to another, while absolute gravimeters measure the local gravity in absolute units (gals – the unit of measurement of gravity).

And although an accelerometer measures acceleration through a particular distance in time with a change in velocity, a gravimeter measures constant acceleration.
