Revisting the Retro

After seeing posts that have looked at some very modern and contemporary radio details, i decided to looked into some retro or Vintage inspired designs. Here is the Thunderbird Retro Neon FM/AM Radio Alarm Clock, in a variety of colour schemes. (Sorry, couldn't find any better quality pictures)

Styled after the classic 1950s Ford Thunderbird, it features a rectangular shape with classic knobs and detailing for a vintage look. It includes an AM/FM radio, the top-loading CD player, an alarm clock which can be set to music or chime, and finally an illuminated neon tube light. This final detail is the one i quite like about the design, to me being very eye-catching. I think that this neon light is what really brings the radios design together to represent a complete retro/vintage appearance.

I also like how it can come in a range of different colour schemes, although i do think that some schemes work better than others. For example i personally prefer the red radio with white neon light over those like the green and white. However i guess those colour schemes add to the retro feel that is trying to be evoked.

An aesthetic detail such as this - completely useless in the hindsight of the radios functionality - that brings the radios aesthetic look together, is something that i hope to accomplish in my own design.
