Soft Edge Ruler

I know I have already posted this week, but I came across this ruler in a book called Product Design when looking for inspiration for the next project. Regular rulers are very hard-edged and rectilinear, which is understandable, because they reflect their metaphorical purpose which is to measure a straight edged Cartesian world. However, form follows function, and this case is a great example of that principle.

The Soft Edge Ruler was designed to improve the user experience and function while also remaining precise. It has been folded from a single sheet of stainless steel, and has been considerately designed for the user to be able to easily grasp through the delicate curl at the top. All this, and it is still easy to switch between cm and inches.

This is a really inventive solution to something that has been around for a very long time. In this product, a great emphasis has been placed on the user, something to think about when we design our own measuring devices!
