Speaker speaker speaker grills

Speaker grills,

What do they do for the radio? What impact do they have on the overall look/design of the radio?

Quite a lot actually.

While they aren't given the recognition as such an important part compared to the user interface etc. speaker grills have the ability to completely change the overall dynamic of the radio.

Speaker grills are divided into 2 groups; soft and rigid. Soft grills consist of cloths or foam and do little to disrupt the sound and being flexible it can move with the sound. And is less susceptible to vibrating/shaking violently. However, The softer grills can tear/stretch, ruining them. Soft grills can look fantastic indoors creating a warm, calm and comfortable setting.

Meanwhile rigid grills are much more robust making the ideal for outdoors or a rough environment. but like all things it has its own pros/cons while they are strong and can give a more aggressive look they are rigid which means the sound quality is lessened as well as the possibility of violent rattling when the sound heightens.

Grill choice all comes down to application. Indoor/outdoor, the users age and the other environmental factors.

Personally I much prefer the cloth grills as the are beautifully subtle and the lack of losing sound quality is much more appealing.
