Believe it or not, it isn't a bar of soap but rather an analog fm radio. I know it's not a digital one, but this one has a user interface that is far more interesting that any digital radio I have come across to date.
A group called Yanko Design designed this rolling radio. The fm radio has been designed to fit snugly into the hand of the user. Placing the radio on a flat surface and then rolling it in different directions control the volume and tuning of the radio. For example, the user moves the radio directly away from them to turn it on and off and to adjust the volume. The tuning is then adjusted by moving the radio left and right.
The rolling control system is achieved by 4 wheels that sit on the base of the radio.
The headphone jack on the face closest to the user is the only thing that protrudes from the smooth white surface. The radio can be used with a headphones via the jack or the radio can utilize the speaker that is on the base of the form with the wheels.
I like this radio because it is fun and challenging to use. Instead of hitting an on switch to start listening to your favorite beats, you have to search for the correct frequency by moving it around on the table in front of you. Maybe this radio isn't for everyone and some people like instant results, but I myself enjoy a challenge.
I love the minimalism of this design. All you see is one headphone jack, which is great.
ReplyDeleteHowever, how much rolling space does it need? There's no point having a wicked interface if it needs a barren desk to operate on - hopefully they got that right.
And I dunno about the sound quality of that speaker facing down, maybe you need external speakers to hear anything decent...
