touch screens

i found this pretty cool looking radio called the sensia, which had no
buttons besides the on and off button. i wanted to really emphasis the
importance of a screen on these internet radios, touch screens aren't
necessary but i think are pretty cool. the touch screen invites the
users to try it themselves and explore. There is no need for a
instruction book as everything is pretty much self explanatory. the
second photo was a image of the back of the radio, and i decided to
put this in because i thought that there would have been a quite
complex process needed to mold the back of the radio, also it shows
the level of detail that is used even at the back of an object.

  1. Who posted this? I'm not sure i agree with the whole 'no need for instructions' for a touch screen. perhaps for a younger generation it may not be required, however i think the biggest problem about the touch screen, as cool as it is, is that there is no user feedback. what i mean is that there is no physical feedback to the user, and therefore may not be so successful to the older generation. with buttons, the user knows they have pushed it, because they are able to feel the button go down and then back up again. also, buttons can have lighting behind them giving visual feedback that something will/has happened.
dont get me wrong, i do love the concept of touch screens, but not everyone may find the touchscreen very successful on a product used as often as a radio, especially by an older market who have grown up only listening to radios.

  2. I agree raz, depending on your target audience a tactile experience is much more rewarding. Seems like a little bit of overkill on the screen, can you watch tv on this thing? 3D?

  3. I agree with both Raz and Ben but I also see the novelty of Pure's design idea. Having a radio with only one button is an interesting idea, similar to having a phone or laptop with very few buttons, ie. iphones and ipads.

However the difference I believe lies in the execution. Pure has created a monstrous design whereas Apple have more refined products.

  5. I've Had a look at this radio before Ben and no, the only thing it allows at this point is a small variety of widgets such as facebook access. no Video as of yet but I believe Pure might be looking at a firmware upgrade.
