As the title suggest, well this is one UGLY radio. It's all wrong like...everywhere!!
I don't really understand why the designer thought that by putting the design as two separate parts, how it would make it look like a 'bug' as the name suggests. It kinda just looks like a robot gone bad.
The slanted speakers don't really help to compliment the design either as it doesn't really flow with the curvature of the sides. The whole extended 'neck' makes it look more like a table lamp. I'm not really sure why but maybe it's the curves they have used that makes it seem very childish, maybe if the curves were a bit sharper it could help the design.
Also the oval display looks like a football, combined with the tacky blue screen.....i don't know it's just plain ugly.
Finally I'm pretty sure they added in more buttons than necessary, especially around the display screen, it doesn't seem well..necessary, simple and neat I think is the way to go.
Anyway this is my little contribution for the week!

I initially thought about blogging about this one.The overall form lacks harmony, it looks as if the display screen and the base were two odd shapes thrown together. It's as if they couldn't visually combine them to look harmonious, and had to resort to physically combining them with a 'neck'.

I think this design is hilarious!
ReplyDeleteThe fact that somebody somewhere thought that this design looked good, and the fact that someone else agreed and approved this design into production is also hilarious!
The neck is out of place. And it looks like it has been added as an after thought. I agree with what is being said about the curves. There are far too many in the main body of the radio. I think that sharper curves, as Mey suggested, would possibly improve the aesthetic appeal of this product towards consumers.

I was also going to write about this horrible design. Its a great example of why you shouldn't ask a fashion designer to design you a radio... although that probably doesn't happen that often.
ReplyDeleteThere's a hilarious yet disturbing animation on the Bug website which shows how they got the award winning (fashion) designer Wayne Hemingway to design their radio- http://www.thebug.com/allabout/index.asp - Supposedly they had to torture him with thumb clamps and on a rack before he would design it. I guess he's had the last laugh now.
In regards to the design of the thing, for me the anatomy of this bug/alien doesn't make sense. They describe the speakers as being the eyes... why aren't they on its head?
To be fair it has been designed for children in mind, and I'm sure this may appeal to some kids, but I think most parents would steer away from it for fear of inducing night terrors.
