Winter just got a little bit more PHAT when I learned about Puerto Rican designer Tania Puell and her "Mysic" collection! Her designs incorporate in-built speakers inside hooded sweatshirts and jackets, and combined with connected friendship bracelets to control what your hood is playing. With cross-device compatibility the design is all about letting you share music on the go. You will be roaming the streets listening to music straight from your hood and sharing your favourites with all your mates. Safe to say that you'll be sick from listening to so many Phat beats that your ears might explode*.
Compatibility of devices is a big winner here already, but also continues to develop. You will have your PC, laptop, MP3 player, mobile phone, favourite CDs, personal radio stations such as Pandora, online stores and social network music applications like MySpace band pages as well as Facebook's iLike, all connected.
The combination of technology and material is developing at a steady state at the moment. Puell has taken the "ordinary" sweatshirt to an extraordinary new level. She pushes the boundaries of technology and has clearly and concisely considered how people currently interact with their music and their personal devices. The location of the touch screen display that is woven onto the sleeve of the sweatshirt acts much like a watch. This is complimented by the unisex look of the bracelet that can also display music information and control the play/pause and volume of your music.
The appeal of this design would target a large audience, as people appreciate the comfort of their sweatshirt and enjoy listening to music. This is a whole new way for people to enjoy their music – working out, relaxing or simply walking about. I would not be surprised if athletic clothing companies will be embracing such designs in the near future.
*No, they won't explode but they might be ringing from listening to so much music.
Keep it real.
