The Melted Clock – A Sleeper’s Best Friend.

For those of us who love to sleep in pure darkness an alarm clock radio can be a bit annoying with the amount of light it produces. Thankfully award winning industrial designer Florian Scharfer has come up with a clever solution.

Amazingly enough, his design involves embedding an alarm clock radio into the sheets of your bed! So instead of waking up in the middle of the night to fumble around for your phone or needing to turn the light on to check your watch for the time you can literally feel the time which is embossed in the surface of the bed sheet!

I honestly think the concept of this design is incredible and so is the technology behind it; the clock segments are constructed using silicone and become embossed when the electroactive polymer slat on which the numbers are positioned is activated by an electric current.

Furthermore, the user can set the alarm and tune the radio by controls that are embroidered on the side of the bed sheet.

You might be questioning the practicality of this device however, do not fret. The bed sheet itself can be washed as the radio and clock devices are enclosed inside small compartments, which can be removed.

I can't imagine a better clock for a deep sleeper like me, when the alarm is activated the radio literally is literally played in your face, with the speaker located in the top right hand side of the sheet!

Ultimately, a very impressive design.
