The Hidden Radio

How it works:
-Pulling the cap up will increase the volume; you can actually see the speaker grills as you lift the cap depending on the proportion of how loud you want it.
-Twisting the cap to tune while the LED light becomes brighter when you reach higher frequencies

I've always been a great fan of simplistic work and I believe this radio well and surely fits within that category. Designed by product designer John Van Den Nieuwenhuizen, this design fits so well under the 'simplicity' category because it understands that we are, naturally, human. By this I mean that the way it's designed to work forces the user to interact with the radio, instead of mindlessly pushing buttons and flicking switches.

But of course what appeals to me more is the amazing simplicity of it all. The subtle curves; the velvet looking finish. You can tell just by looking at it that once you twist that cap, it's going to be as smoothe as chocolate. What also interests me is the fact that there is no guide or engraving of information telling you where the volume is or how to tune it. In some cases this might be confusing but once you do figure it out, it will be like an epiphany- making the experience more magical because it feels like you've cracked a massive code or a password. Overall I think this is an incredibly clever and innovative design that will always remind me less is more.

  1. I am also a fan of this simplistic design and like the idea of the challenge of working out the subtleties of the design and then only you knowing those subtleties.
