Mikael Silvanto has ingeniously fused modern technology with plain old-school objects when it came to designing the 08 Radio. Instead of integrating the tuners in the radio body like most designs, Silvanto had made the radio body part of the tuning function. He has converted the familiar tuning bar seen on traditional radios into a larger structural scale. The channels of the radio are changed by sliding the speaker and radio unit along the rail, giving a recognisable feel of high precision measuring tools.
Like many of the other favourite radio designs on the blog so far, I like this design because it promotes a joy of function with its creative interactivity. This isn't just my favourite because of its cool user interface; I also like the design for its visual appeal. It has a well balanced combination between the modern sleek style of its form and the old-fashioned inspiration in its details. Although it is important to note that due to the compactness of the design, it is incapable of being a digital radio and only a lower quality mono speaker can be used. The design went in production in late 2008.

This radio is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more that it has such a balanced commanding presence, and with a great interface.
External speakers could be hooked up to it, to improve the audio?

I've changed my mind...THIS is a brilliant radio. I agree that the form is really interesting and the interection between the user and product is really quite unique. How is the volume adjusted?
