Vital Signs Wristband Refinement

This week my refinement has so far been quite limited. I still have a lot of model making to do, so I anticipate I will work a lot more on the form in the next week. My wrist band is mostly figured out in terms of measurements and proportions, and also surface details, but i expect these will vary somewhat as my time working in three dimensions influences my design. I used a bit of hep from Measure of Man and Woman with the dimensions of the wristband, its a good resource.

I still have to work on the form of my base station. Its not very unified and lacks a certain flow, and I haven't decided on it's exact measurements. Hopefully I will be able to work this out bofer the end of the week.

During the refinement process I have used resources to help me change the form and materials I intend to use. For example, I found I had to add a new part to the wristband to allow the functions to be fulfilled, and change the form to make it comfortable. I have also added a few material changes, like a coloured rubber section, to change the style of the form a bit and make it less sanitary and medical, and more personal.

Week 9 - Good Measure refinement

 Fellow Industrial Design students.

As far as the refinement of my sound measuring device goes I have further developed the form and smaller details of the design in the workshop. I have given the edge of the form a radius to eliminate sharp edges, become more aesthetically pleasing and also to make the injection moulding process easier (as my products shell would be made using injection moulding if it went into production).
I have also given the buttons a rounded edge so the are more satisfying for the user to press and use. This also makes the buttons looks more like buttons and less like pieces of wood.

I have also designed a logo for my device so that I could vacuum form a section of my model. The mechanism for my device has also been refined using magnets to allow the lower section to be detached for the transferral of data to a computer.

Enjoy the break!

Worst Product Ever

Okay this is not my own find but it was shown on the Gruen Transfer 21st Sept 2011 season 4 episode 8.

Worst Product Ever:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etU_wtP5Pck&feature=related

This was never a good idea...the only thing I wonder and I am concerned about is how many people actually bought this product and still have it stashed away in their cupboard with all their other Danzo Direct purchases.

Enjoy!

digital bungle design in process

The shape of my digital love detecting bungle is as the white soft model showed.Machanisms in my bungle including twising rings, sliding wings , sliding scren covers and several buttons.I tried different solutions to figure out the most difficult thing (Twisting ring), such as bending C sections, using Halles Wheel and make double levels of rings.  There are 6 pieces of wood for my main body of the bungle and several small pieces for buttons and such stuffs. So far I ve sanded all the blocks and used PVA to put them together. Hopefully I will finish all the shapings this weel then figure out the mechanisms next week. Welcome to discuss with me about any mechanisms.

Progress of my design

My device is used for measureing breath smell. It is a great useful device since a third of population on earth are suffered from bad breath. There are many tools that helps to improve your breath smell, however there aren't any devices that tell you directly your breath level. I think there is a huge market for such product.
I havent post my hard models yet, because they were not ready to show, but i have constantly thought about my design in which the form can be even more attractive. As you can see, there is a huge change from my original design. The second design is strongly emphasis on the handle part of the way you hold it. It works but not looking as elegant as the first one, i realised this and try to stick with the form of first design as close as possible. thus my next two design is much more related to the original design. My later deisgns are also carried some of the strength from the pervious designs,
I concentrated on designing something is efficient and easy to use, at the same time it has to be looking good. it then leads to me to design thing like the fourth design. it works like a flip phone, but it is a bit different.  It has a really elegant looking when you flip it back, unfortunately i didn't drawing a good view of that. i believe this design has many drawbacks but this is good direction for my device. what do you think? please give me some feedback.

Sorry for posting so late.. won't happen next time..promise.. YIFU

pollen counter.

My device has taken on many changes throughout the design process, as it probably should have. my design is something that measures pollen count in the air and informs the user to avoid this area if they are allergic to that particular type of pollen. it firstly started off as something that went around your neck, like a collar, but would be hidden under the collar so that it would not look bad. however this design was not very successful. the design then went in the direction of something that could perhaps clip on something that you are carrying, such as a bag, a pram, a picnic basket etc. this went well, however my soft model was not reflective of the form that i wanted the design to go in the direction of. after more developmental design, i have come up with a sort of square shaped design with bent over corners which has a clip on the back. the inspiration for this design came from a watch face, and i quite like the uniformity and the cleanness of the hole design. it would be, i think, quite inconspicuous if placed on a bag or even around your waist belt. i also like this design because it could easily strap around your arm or bicep if the user wanted to go for a run in the spring time.

'Perido'

Ladies, forget your troubles of remembering when your next period is and being in that difficult position where you forgot to take something with you. 'Perido' is here to be better than any man in your life. This discrete device measures when your next period is due and will not complain or announce it for the world to know.

Now don't rush all at once ladies or even men, lets go through some specs and changes that are currently being undertaken by Mote Co.
'Perido' measure by wearing a simple bracelet for around 20mins, that records details from a intelligent strap on the inside. Information is then transmitted back to the docking station and on screen there is a simple light up indicator to inform you ladies of approximately how long until your period. This device would be 90% accurate, there is always factors like emotion and hormones that can change the reading, but at Mote Co. we are determined to help relieve the stress of that annoying time of month.

Mote Co., designs are in the fortunate position to be designing a product like this for the first time. There have been changes in the design of the bangle and this also leaves options open for the future. Considerations of size of the wrist and location of docking station have been a challenge. Mote Co., have changed the docking system numerous times to ensure that it sits either discretly in a cupboard or on your bench top against a wall. Raised up so that water does not puddle around it, much like electric toothbrush chargers. Details of the display have been manipulated and changed throughout the process. Considering other ways to inform you ladies but keeping it quite enough so that your man or visitors to your home do not freak out when entering your bathroom. Mote Co., are making this design simple and easy for you ladies no matter what the age.

If you turn up to Tuesday morning's class for three easy payments of $19.99 there will be further information about 'Perido' and when you can place your orders.

p.s. Apologies for the delay this is poor form from me!

Atmosphere meter

My design, the atmosphere meter, is a device that measures how suitable is the environment of a room to study. The basic inputs are the light intensity, temperature, noise and oxygen content in the air.
I started with a manually operated design (a button had to be pressed to suck in the air so the amount of oxygen could be measured) that would be placed on the desk. Taking into consideration the critiques received after the first pin-up, I progressed to a wall mounted design and had to alter the shape. And like most wall mounted devices (for example, air-con units, projectors, etc) I also added a remote control (in blue foam) that can be detached and clipped back to the main unit of my measuring device which would make it more user friendly.
I'll be making a few more modifications. I'll make the main unit thinner and add some buttons to give the device a more functional look. I'll also try to add some lines on the surface of the device because I find it a bit plain at the moment.

This is where I'm at with my project at the moment. My Model is still in a very blocky form and a lot larger than what I intend it to be.

You can notice my model has 4 cut-away bits and the drawing has 5, I can't decide what number to choose yet. I'm not sure what to say, I do think I can better incorporate the microphone speaker grooves better into my final design, what was just a bit of an afterthought has turned into the focal point.

progress

My design is a portable/hand held 3D scanner. It measures volume, to determine of a scanned object can fit into a negative space that has also been scanned. It would be useful for storing objects efficiently, with the least amount of wasted space. Applications for this product would be domestic and industrial use. It could also be used in security, where an area can be scanned to determine if something is missing.

It is essentially a torch form, and the user would press a 'trigger' like button, which would allow the scanner to pop out. There are another two buttons, to differentiate between scanning the first and second time. LEDs will communicate whether it fits or not.

My first designs did not take into account user interaction, and was not ergonomic.

I needed to 'interrogate' the form more, till I was able to find a more ergonomic shape, that considered how it would be used, which is shown in the last two images.

I still haven't made a foam model of my modified design.

Recycling bin

Recycling bin

In brief, what I have designed for the measurement project is a garbage bin with recycling bin. This product measures the weight of wastes and displays how much the person contributes to save environment by means of LED tree. The heavier the recycling waste is the higher LED tree level goes up.

There were massive changes throughout the process. The shapes and functional attributes are mainly changed. When I designed it first, It had four different categories: Landfill, plastic, paper and glass. But as it is used outside of house, I realized that the recycling bin does not need to divide the categories into three. It could just be recycling bin. So I have decided to design my recycling and landfill bins into two categories.

Another change was the shape. As it is used in public, I needed to think about the vandalizing. What I designed first had independent solar panel which was mounted on the bin. But that doesn't look strong enough to resist external impact. So what I have decided to solve this problem is that I have changed the shape and put the solar panel on the bin.

Hydration level

Here is a few photos of my work for Good Measure. Unfortunately, I don't have a picture of my soft model, because I gave it to Robbie for marking last studio, but I shall put up a picture of it once I get my model back.

My device measures hydration level of pretty much anything. It can measure your skin, a fruit, a moisturizer, etc. Simply by attaching the patch to the surface of an object, it will take a few seconds to analyze. Then the meter on the left, which looks like a water drop, will light up according to how hydrated the object is. The water drop meter is divided into 5 intervals, each interval represents 20 percent.

Since the last pin up, this design has been changed quite a bit in terms of size, form and interface. The size of my design has become smaller. It is now about the size of a pinecone, which makes it convenient for users to bring along with them when they go out. I have introduced negative spaces all around the device. These gaps on the device have made it easier to grab and hold. And the patch that is the key to measuring the hydration level is changed to retractable, instead of just hanging off the device. This has brought in mechanism into the design and also made it a neat and compact design.

There's still a lot of refinement and decision to make regarding the design and how it works.

Good Measure Design.... Direction

Throughout the design process my design has changed into something which now much more resembles that of a spaceship. Due to the time constraints the form is not the best and is certainly not showing that 'designer' look but due to the need to have a design ready for model making this is my current design.

Good Measure

G'day All

Firstly, to explain my product; it is a device that measures the weight/strain of a backpack whilst being worn so as to inform the user of the potential danger of injury. it does so by replacing the buckle, and so bridging the gap between the upper and lower strap with a movable pin that is held back by spring tension. I discovered during my refinement a major flaw in my design, that I hadn't resovled how the user views interface. Where the screen was located orginally (on the sketch)would have forced the user to look across the screen rather than be able to look directly at it, so I moved the interface to the end of the device (where it is located on the soft model), facing directly up at the user, above where the bag strap would fit in. To encorperate this cange in design I had to alter the shape of the device so that it could accomodate the shape of the screen. As well as this, workshop requires I include a button which i believe will sit along side the screen where, again, the user can best see it.

Music Analyser

I'll begin this week's post with a little story of the inspiration behind my design. Back in high school I played the violin in the school orchestra. Often during rehearsal, receiving personal feedback on how you're playing was difficult. Especially for string instruments, it is often very hard to stay in tune or be pitch perfect. So I've developed a design for the good measure brief that will measure how accurate a student is playing a piece of music. The target audience will be string instrument students.

The device will analyse the player's musical accuracy by comparing the players pitch and timing relative to average pitch and timing of the rest of the orchestra. It will be clamped to the body of the string instrument. It will simply output a percentage of accuracy after the user has decided to stop the device from recording. Obviously the device will have its limitation such as the inability to measure tone and articulation.

Upon the completion of my soft model, it was clearly evident that the size and proportion of the device will need be explored thoroughly. Fitting the technical package and designing a user-friendly interface is one of the challenges I've faced in designing such a small measuring device.

Another challenge has been making the form be not so intrusive when clamped to the violin. During the development stages, I've have made the form more organic and uniform. I've also tried to make the juxtaposition between the modernism of the device and the traditional and conservative form not so strong.

Since I am not undertaking model-making class this semester, I have not yet started on the hard model (:S). Hopefully I will commence construction shortly after I have refined the interface and form of my design.

Fw: Good Measure

My design for a blood nitrogen tester for divers has changed a lot since the first pin up of the project.  The shape is very different to those that i first came up with although the general method of collecting its data has stayed quite the same.  The test will basically take a small sample of blood from a prick on the finger, the device will then analyse the blood and let the diver know the amount of nitrogen in the blood and whether any has begun to form into the dangerous bubbles that cause 'the bends'.

Doesn't seem to want to co-operate with my photos so i guess you'll have to wait for class to see how it's going.

Water purity tester

My measurement device is a water purity tester which determines if a certain water supply is safe enough to drink by measuring the total dissolved solids. I believe this device would be very usefull if travelling overseas, camping or even testing tap water to check for corroded pipes. Usually these devices would give a measurement of 'parts per million' which can be very confusing to the user, so i am going to use two LED's to show if the water should be avoided or is ok to drink. I have thought about including more LED's so the purity of the water could be seen on a smaller increment scale, but this may cause people to take risks and drink the water when it is only marginally above the safe level. The water will be tested by flipping the lid open with a button and then scooping up a small amount of water.

I have found making foam models very helpful through the development of my device. Due to it being a hand held device the comfort is very important, the only way to improve this factor is to actually make a prototype to hold. The development of shape can be seen through my foam models which are placed with the first soft model on the left through to the latest on the right. The shape of the design has changed to improve comfort whilst also trying to style it with a mixture of sharp edges and curves. A few slight alterations are needed in the shape and buttons before i can start carving the details into the wood blocks, but it is getting very close.
