The drum rack may not be the most elegant looking design but it is my favourite as it has been created to solve multiple functionality problems of a regular drum setup. At gigs drum kits are often assembled in very limited spaces on stages. The regular stand takes up valuable floor space just to support a single cymbal as the shaft which supports the cymbal or drum is attached to a wide tripod of legs. In any one setup there are several stands competing for space. When the drum sticks strike the drums the whole stand tends to move and requires constant adjustment and correction. This is inconvenient for the drummer and can affect the quality of performance. The drum rack replaces multiple bulky stands with bars which sit around the perimeter of the kit. The cymbals and drums are easily and securely mounted onto the bars and adjusted to the required position. The rack usually only requires 4 pronged feet to support all the cymbals and toms. The rack makes all the components more stable and increases precious floor space. But perhaps the greatest benefit of the rack is the fact that you can reassemble the kit in a consistent way, from the lounge room to the stage.
It may be hard to understand from a non-drummers point of view but when you are used to a particular setup and positions of drums change, it is a nightmare!
The Yamaha Hex Rack addresses all the functionality problems of an original kit setup but in style. Yamaha's rack uses hex-shaped pipes to provide superior strength over the rounded pipes that dominate the market. This system also allows the bass drum to be elevated off the ground for added sound resonance. Together with a matte chrome finish and sleek curves this rack makes a stunning impact under stage lights. I think customizable instrument components like the drum rack is quite an exciting area of potential future design…

Thats such a great idea. Do the original drum mounts fit onto the frame or do you have to buy new drums too? How much can you buy them for?

Any Drum kit can be mounted on a rack as the rack comes with clamps which latch onto multiple size tom and cymbal arms. Around $1000 depending on the size of your kit
