ARRAS - Workspace for the Future

I recently took a trip to the Design Made Trade Exhibition in Carlton and discovered this Hermann Miller Arras workspace within the Australian International Design Awards section, presented by Good Design Australia.

Arras - "Motivated by our nomadic yet socially connected lifestyle, enabled by technological advancement, and inspired by our innate desire for beautiful objects."

I personally think that any design which takes into careful consideration the changing environment and works towards enhancing that idea is taking a step in the right direction. In this case the Arras looks into the changing workspace, encouraging more flexibility and greater communication and sharing between colleagues.

But what I really like about the Arras is all its nifty features: from its huge colour scheme to the detailing of sliding binders, pivot wing access to power supplies, interchangeable components, plastic planters, trays and bag hooks. So much thought has gone into how we function in a working environment and the amount of flexibility needed to define and redefine our space as things evolve.

I really have tried looking for a flaw in this product, and if anything it might be just a bit too sterile. But I think that with anything, that would change once users started adding their own personal touches to the space.

  1. WOW, impressive. I like Arras' focus on functionality. And its use of bold colours really does differentiate itself from its competitors. I went to Ikea recently and was tired of the usual black/white/beech colour schemes. However for me, the Arras workstations seem only suitable in an office environment. The company should expand on their target audience and develop workstations more appropriate for home uses.

Hey also Steph (and others), you may also be interested in the 'K Workstation' designed by the MisoSoupDesign.
